Treat stiff neck by rubbing the back of the hands

If you feel soreness and limited mobility in your neck and back after getting up in the morning, it’s likely that you have a “worn-out neck” (or “worn-out shoulder”). This condition is often caused by improper head and neck positions during sleep, an overly high pillow, exposure to cold in the neck, or cervical spondylosis. As a common discomfort in daily life, traditional Chinese medicine has some tricks to alleviate it. Here, I’d like to recommend a method for you – rubbing the back of your hands.

Between the second and third metacarpal bones on the back of our hands, there is a “fallen shoulder acupoint”. You can alternate massaging with both hands. The force should gradually increase from light to heavy. When massaging, slightly lean your head forward, slowly retract from the front bottom, bring your lower jaw closer to the sternum fossa, keep the neck relaxed, and slowly rotate your head left and right, starting with small movements and gradually increasing the amplitude, and gradually extend the neck to its normal position. At the same time, combining with rubbing the Fengchi acupoint, Dazhui acupoint or Ai Si acupoint (depending on the condition, there is no fixed location, and any pain indicates the presence of the acupoint), the effect will be better. These acupoints all have the functions of relaxing muscles, promoting blood circulation, relaxing spasms and relieving pain.
